Weekly Update #3: Muscles, Metal and Musings.

This week was primarily spent doing small tweaks to existing work, or practicing new styles or techniques on existing designs. First off is the Android, it has been fully textured and all the areas are colour coded. however, once the texture maps were applied I found the design to be vastly too 'cartoon-like'. And so I experimented with the texture maps. As you can see below are what the original map looks like. I decided to try adding some metallic detail. I wanted it to be incredibly subtle however, and so using a very low opacity and having the texture on 'overlay' allowed me to pull this texture map away from the cartoon world and add some realism to it, without detracting from it's very simple design.
We were also asked to quickly produce various head types in Zbrush. Whilst this obviously isn't my first time using the program, it's the first time we've been 'officially' told to use it in university. Here are some of the mock ups I quickly put together by simply making a basic head and tweaking it in various areas:
As well as the heads were were also asked to try exploring both realistic and stylised anatomy. Below is my take on the realism, as well as the original image I was basing my mesh on:
And here is my take on stylised anatomy, but unfortunately there wasn't much time to really flesh this out during the lesson.
Finally there comes some work for a project I have been working on with my close friend for a few months now. The time is coming to either work on a teams idea for our final major project on our university course, or to possibly lead one. I'm hoping that by having the right project, one that fulfills all of not only my own goals, but the goals of those who may wish to work with me, that I'll have enough forward momentum and drive in the entire team to create something really special. The idea itself is simple, what if Pokémon met Monster Hunter? What is really a challenge for me however is getting the correct style. We want something very illustrative, but not so far fetched that sculpting, rigging and animating it would be beyond our time scale and abilities. Whilst this is not officially course work and I have no guarantee that this project will even be greenlit at the pitching sessions in roughly a months time, I've been spending a considerable amount of time trying to get some very early pre-production done to try and win over some of the other students. And so here's what I've sketched in the last week:
If we were officially in pre-production I'm sure I would create a lot more variants and flesh out the actual 'character' a lot more. However, right now this is merely a template, and I must say I do like where it's heading. Getting across a simplistic almost watercolour style will no doubt be a challenge (even in 2D), but if this works it will no doubt be a portfolio piece I will be very glad to show. I hope to show you more, and if the group allows, I may show you a lot more in the coming months!

Monster Hunter Design - Oryctomus (Armour)

Following on from the previous post about my recent Monster Hunter design (which can be found here: Oryctomus Design), I'll be focusing this post on the armour made from this creatures hide.

The armours in Monster Hunter take on the characteristics of the monster they're created from. Some are more obvious than others in their designs, but each either feature some design element from the monster itself, or a representation of how that monster attacks. The armours also come in two variations, Blademaster and Gunner.

Blademaster is heavier armour, used for high defense, and almost always looks sturdier than the Gunner variation.

The Gunner variation uses more stylistic aspects and often has weaker armour, used mostly for long range characters who'd rather not get up close and personal with a monster.

I began sketching designs for both gunner and blademaster variations, both male and female.

Monster Hunter Design - Oryctomus (Creature)

So recently I had spent some time asking for portfolio reviews. One criticism I had was that not much of my designs seemed clean enough for modellers to use. I was guided towards the Monster Hunter artbooks (ones I already owned a loved), and was told they had very good examples of clean work, and excellent design.

With this I decided to kill several birds with one stone. Getting clean work, turnarounds, and also one character and creature design out of it. For this post however I'll be focusing mostly on the creature, as before you can build the armour for Monster Hunter, you must have a monster to carve its hide from. I began by sketching down some general shapes for the monster. My original idea was to have a more mammalian design, as much of the creature in Monster Hunter are typically Reptilian. Perhaps something along the lines of an Aardvark or Anteater.

Terryl Whitlatch Creature Course #1

I recently signed up to a creature design course hosted by Terryl Whitlatch on Schoolism. I'm a huge fan of Terryl's work, so it'll be interesting to see how I develop my creature work whilst on her course.

These should be weekly updates, and this week's topic was to try and get a grasp of the fundamentals of creature design. So our challenge was to draw a human, a tetrapod, and a human/animal hybrid. Then break those down by rig, skeleton and musculature and label each.
